Christell admits. “My first leather product
couldn’t be sold …” she chuckles, “but it sparked my interest and I enrolled in
a leather handcraft course in Vanrhynsdorp.”
There Christell studied under Frik van
Jaarsveld, a true leather artisan who grew up in an orphanage, where the onus
was on him to mend his own leather school shoes. The rest is obviously history.
She stayed on with the Van Jaarsvelds for another 10 days and got acquainted
with all the basics of leather, such as stitching, pattern-making, cutting,
choosing the right leather and business skills.
